Any suggestions for the best wood or material to use for permanent patterns.
I'd like to eliminate the printing and expensive spray glue by cutting out pattern pieces from thin wood.  Then I could just trace around these rigid pattern cut outs when I wanted to make something.
Ive tried a few thin veneer panels, but the wood splinters and doesnt cut smoothly...
Any suggestions for a smooth cutting durable material?
Thanks

I use composite laminate flooring for my templates very smooth finish to put double sided tape on and easy to clean. buy seconds in builders merchants or b & q stores etc.

earthrox - There have been a few posts on the Form which suggest using hardboard and floor tiling.
I use many types of materials for my templates. 1/4" to 1/2" MDF, 1/4" to 3/4" plywood, construction grade and finished with a veneer, Pine, thick plastic and even pressure treated fence boards. Hardboard works great and I have not tried the flooring tile as of yet, but should give it a try. Which material I use is driven by how and where I will use it. For example, I use plywood if I am going to use the template for routing and the thickness is driven by which flush trim router bit I will be using.

Templates are also driven by how you wish to store them, thin ones can be easily stored in file holders in a file cabinet dependent on size, others hang on the wall with a nail and lastly in a template box.
Looking forward to seeing more reply's to your post from the Forum members on what they use.

I started using the 12x12 peel and stick vinyl tiles you can get at Home Depot or any flooring store.
They are less than a dollar each and work great.

When you have the pattern cut out then just cut the peel off backing off the back and stick the pattern to the 12x12 tile.  I like to wrap the area in packing tape, so I don't have to clean off the edges, then cut with any old scroll saw blade with the power down on the saw.

Now you have a thin template that you can use over and over again.  When I am finished with the templates I just put the in a sandwich bag and store in a file.

This Idea was shared by John some time ago, and I really like using them.
