This video is a must-watch to learn the details about ebonizing woods. It is an inexpensive and effective process. Question[biggrin]oes the ebonizing go through the entire thickness of the wood like heat-treating does?

The wheel barrel and wheel on the bird house was dipped in the vinegar and steel wool solution. It work really well.

Good to know.  I did watch and looks like a good safe experiment.  I have a non-toxic dye that I use on the wheels now because I like my wheels to be dark.  This is another option.

Old thread  i know but i thought i should just add a word of caution here.

I saw this thread yesterday and decided to give it a try, stuffed a handful of wire wool into the vinegar jar and placed it on the shelf, went in this evening to have a check on it and it seemed fine, went back into the house for 5 minutes and returned to find i had created some sort of vinegar bomb?

vinegar everywhere, glass everywhere, the shelf is at face height so i know i had a lucky escape there as im finding glass in all 4 corners of the workshop but im more upset that my lovely shiny bandsaw table is now covered in flash rust.
Not sure what went wrong but I think my mistake was i closed the lid?
ahh well, we learn something new every day, today was my Chemistry lesson
Be careful out there [smile]
