I really like your head light idea. I wish I had thought of that when I was making my Play Pal Monster trucks. Which by the way were made from glued up pieces of salvaged wood.

Here are some photos of the finished bus with the headlights cut. 
I was looking for a more oval finish, so will experiment a bit more.

That worked out great.  I thought the headlights would be more oval too, you put them in at a pretty good angle.  I like the wood laminating.

Hopefully you don;t have the same problem I have. When I make something I like I have a real tuff time parting with it,

I think the curve on the front would counter the oval effect you were expecting to get by inserting the dowels at an angle. If you went straight in to the center of the curve I think you would see a bit of an oval shape.

These look great.

I actually like the head lights just as they are LOL... oval would be nice, but at the end of the day you still have a nice toy that would make any kiddo proud to own no matter what the head light looks like.
