It's been a while since I have made a post. I have some questions about using
using marine plywood in making wood toys, do the formaldehyde glue that is used
in the plywood. My question is it safe to use in toys that are donated to
children someone told me the sawdust and sanding dust are very toxic. I have
access to a supply of this plywood. All the surfaces will be hand finished
with 4 coats of gloss poly. Any help in this mattress will be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks larry

You ask an important question. Marine plywood is safe for children that are 3 years old or older. The finish of gloss poly is also safe for children 3 years old or older. Children younger than 3 years sometimes chew the toys and can swallow splinters or sawdust. Toys for children under 3 years old that are still teething should be made only from hard maple wood or similar wood. Please post your projects on the forum. We look forward to seeing your toy creations!

Thanks John for your information regarding my question about marine plywood.
I have no idea where the toys I donate go and the ages of the Children who
receive them. So to be safe I will only use solid wood unless.I know for
sure they a not going children under three years of age. Your help is greatly
appreciated.

All wood is toxic to some extent as are most plants. Walnut leaves, for example, will kill tomato plants if you mulch with them or use them in compost. Plants including trees protect themselves from each other using something called allelopathy. Simply put they produce toxins to kill off their completion.

If I had a source of marine plywood I would not hesitate to use it to make toys. In fact just the other day I was asking some people I know who build boats where I could get some. Unfortunately, nearest source is 200 miles form me. Marine plywood doesn't have any voids and obviously it is water resistant. If your interested there is a video on youtube about how marine grade plywood is made.
