I am so excited about this Red Planet Rockets plan set from Toymakingplans.com.

We just finished it and took a few photos, and a master added the background for me.  Is this a great photo or what.  Thanks for the background.

My photos are not so great, but I wanted to share with you a fun build.

This set is made from MDF and painted with the new to me metallic paints.  I wanted to see how the metallic paints would do over the MDF with no primer.  Looks OK to me.

We did make some mods to this set as you can see from the photos, above and below.
I cut the shuttle and the rocket out of the same piece of wood as if it were a puzzle, which made for a better fit.

I cut two of the wings on the rockets when cutting the rocket out, which only left the other two wings to cut and glue on.  I did set dowels from the rocket into the wings for strength.

Also as you can see from the above and below photos, I put dowel pegs into the rocket and the landing vehicle so the shuttle could be mounted on both for the play factor.  We wanted to rocket and shuttle to be able to launch together, then have the shuttle separate from the rocket and fly on to finish it's mission, then when landed back on earth to be mounted on the land vehicle so it can be played with by rolling it around.

Hope you like this set.  We will share more about the build here later on the forum.
Thanks

Hi Ken,
These are really cool. Good job. Where do you purchase your metallic paints?

Rocket Man Ken - Great looking project. Interesting that you painted the metallic paint on bare MDF, when I look at the larger photos, the coverage looks really good. I liked your idea of adding the dowels on the rocket to hold the shuttle in place and adding them to the landing gear - makes sense to me, excellent modification.

Thank You All For The Nice Words About Our New Project.

Cynthia and John; without your fantastic patterns none of this would be possible for me.

Frankg; I have been buying my first metallic paints from Michele's Craft Store.  However, they carry a limited supply of the colors that are available on line.  So I am going on a search of the internet soon, to find more colors.  Will let you know what I can find and where I find them.

Udie;  You are being modest, because you know I had planned to put the dowels in the Space Shuttle and you are the one who suggested putting them in the Rocket and the Landing gear, so the Shuttle could still make a nice smooth landing when returning to earth.
I am just trying to follow the advice of the Master.
Your modification to my modification was a really good idea.  Thanks

Hi All
We just finished the third set of 7 red planet rocket ships, and wanted to show you. This one surprised me at how nice the yellow and brown Krylon spray paint did.
Oh, and don't worry, I won't bore you with photos of all 7 sets.
Let me know what you think.

This last photo is Udie,s fault.  He ask me to show how we take photos getting OK results with just an old digital camera.  1st I use my wife's formal dinning room table and table cloth because it sparkles.  I put two bar stools up on the table and drape the table cloth over them.  2nd, right behind me is a good size window, so at the right times of day I have perfect lighting.  No fancy set up.

Hope you enjoyed.

Ken - Fantastic paint job on these. One of my problem colours is yellow and I see that using Krylon spray should be my way also. Your tip on how to take these photos really demonstrates that a simple setup and natural light can produce professional looking results. Thanks for posting that one also.

Another Red Planet Rocket Ship Ready to Take Off.

Roly, to answer you question, yes my wife knows, and allows me to use it.  If I get anything on it, I get to get her a new one, which I think is what she is hoping for.

Photos of the white rocket.

Maybe we should take the kids on a field trip to see the rockets blast off.DSC04570_mini.JPG
Or maybe we could take them whale watching.

These are great.  The brown and yellow really work well together.  It is hard to get quality photos, your idea makes it easy.
